Yelp allows you to search for restaurants, bars, coffee & tea, banks, gas & service stations and drugstores, near you either by name of in a list format in a matter of seconds. In addition to the categorized locations, you can also choose to search for “everything” which essentially gives you a list of everything else that wouldn’t necessarily fall under the preselected categories.

One thing I love about Yelp is that it gives you the specific location and hours of any type of restaurant or business you are searching for. In addition to the hours for particularly restaurants it also provides you with information about the attire, if there is outdoor seating, if they accept credit cards, delivery, if it is good for kids, take reservations, what the parking situation is (public, private, paid, free, etc.), if it is good for groups, if take out is available and lastly what meals they serve. Each of these things are essential for selecting a place to go and for the most part I have for that is is accurate in each category.

If you want to find a specific place you can also type the name of what you are looking for, into the search engine and it will give you a list of all locations near you. The great thing about the search engine is you can type in something as generic as coffee or as specific as Starbucks. If you type in a more generic term, like coffee, it will give you a list of all locations that serve coffee. Whereas if you type in a most specific term, like Starbucks, it will give you a list of all Starbucks locations nearest you.

With the Yelp application you can also bookmark places. This feature is great if you go somewhere that you really like and want to remember it for later, you can simply tap the bookmark button and it will be added to the list of your bookmarks.

Another neat feature is check-ins. With this you can “check-in” at a particular place to say that you are there and it will be posted at that location whenever people view that location within the application. One benefit to checking-in is that some businesses offer check-in offers that you can only receive if you check-in at their location. Although, if you’re looking for a great deal, and don’t want to check in, you can also select the sales & specials tab which gives you a list of places in all categories that have any sort of sale or special.
